Business Process Modelling

Developing a process model introduces a formal activity to the process (re)design task. The benefit of modelling is found in the level of rigour it adds to the undertaking.

Business Process Modelling Notation

We strongly favour use of the Object Management Group's (OMG) Business Process Modelling Notation (BPMN) as the means to capture and communicate business process models.

BPMN provides a graphical flow-charting approach to developing business process diagrams. These diagrams represent the activities and flow controls of a given process.

Use of BPMN offers a number of benefits:

  • A standardised way to capture and communicate business process designs
  • A means to reduce the gap between business process design and implementation

Modelling Tools

We work with you to select an appropriate modelling approach and the right products for your environment.

To get the most out of BPMN it is best to use a modelling tool to develop and maintain BPMN artefacts. We typically use IBM's WebSphere Business Modeller for these activities. A further advantage of a tool like this is that you can use it with a Publishing Server and so share process models and collaborate with stakeholders.

The modelling tool must be able to export a model to a target BPM runtime. The runtime will utilise BPEL (Business Process Execution Language) - this is an execution language used by BPM technologies.
